The Elasticator!

I have to admit that I get a bit of a thrill when I can make good use of some little tool or tip that is like a new discovery to me. This time it is the Elasticator! As close to a super hero as it gets up in my sewing room!

Does this sound familiar to any of you? You see a good idea for something you would like to make but it involves not only buying a new foot for your machine but also finding out if you can really make it work like the 'experts' make it work. We all know those feet don't come on the cheap, and some see destined to have no good purpose other than part of your oh-so-impressive display of unused sewing machine accessories? When you are considering the purchase, you are waffling back and forth in your head about whether this is really worth spending money on, just how important is this little hunk of metal, how much time do I really think I have to learn another sewing machine trick, etc., etc. I really had it kind of lucky with this particular foot, because it came with my Bernina 1100DA serger when I bought it about 10 years (or so) ago. That machine is no longer manufactured, but is pretty similar to this current model. I'm sure it was explained to me when I had my new owner's class but something about the elasticator didn't stick. Not too long ago, I thought I might try to figure out how to use it, but that led to a problem because I broke something on the machine when I tried to remove the standard foot and put on the elasticator. So after that got repaired, I was hesitant to ever try to change the foot again! But I was motivated by becoming a first-time grandma, and I am putting all of my sewing skills on the line to feather the nest for this little grandson. That brings me to making fitted crib sheets to match the nursery, of course! Making a casing and threading elastic all the way around the sheet(s) was something I was not real keen on, and this was the way I found to get around that.

I started out looking at a few patterns/directions/tutorials and gleaning the basics for my own ideal crib sheet using my serger and elasticator. One good resource is here. I bought 2 yards of fabric for each sheet and 3.25 yds of 1/4" elastic.

I have added my own ideas and here goes--

I used the standard mattress size to guide me (27" x 52" x 5 1/2") and adjusted the size of my starting rectangle of fabric according to the width of the fabric after it was washed and selvedge trimmed. For example, one piece was only 40 1/2" wide and the other was 42" wide. That measurement has to be the maximum size of the width of the sheet.

I am not allowing any fabric for the folded elastic casing nor french seams, so my numbers are a little different than the usual pattern directions. So if I add 27 + 5.5 + 5.5=38 and subtract that from 42, I know that there is going to be only 2" on each tuckunder side. Then to figure out the long measurement for the rectangle, I added 52 + 5.5 + 5.5 + 2 + 2 = 67". My rectangle is 42" x 67". I need to cut squares out of each corner, and in this case the square needs to be the height of the mattress (5.5") + the tuckunder allowance (2") minus 1/4" for seam allowance = 7.25".

Clear as mud?

This demonstrates that the square will be cut from each of the 4 corners of the rectangle of fabric. You can fold the rectangle in half twice, aligning the corners, and cut all 4 at once.

Next, place the right sides of the fabric together with the corner edges aligned to make a 'box corner'.

Serge a seam down 3 (not all 4) of the corners.

Then change to the elasticator foot, following the appropriate directions. Before you do anything on your sheet, do some practice runs with scraps. You will have to waste some elastic to do this, but that can't be helped. Play around with the adjustment screw to make the stretch more or less, according to what you like. I found that my best setting was kind of middle of the road, about halfway between all the way tight and all the way loose.

Start at the "open" corner, the one you did not sew shut in the previous step.

I found that if I ran the fabric edge even with the right side of the foot, it was positioned to trim just a bit as the elastic was attached and the edge was cut and serged.

Keep going all the way around the 4 edges, right across those corner seams when you come to them.

When you get back to the unsewn corner cut the elastic and threads and change back to the regular serger foot.

Lay the right sides together and serge up that last corner seam.

I use this handy double-eyed needle to thread the long thread tails back through some of the stitches to secure it

and add a dab of Fray Check to hopefully prevent any loose thread ends.

Just a little dab 'l do ya'. Does that phrase ring a bell with you? If so, I know you just as mature as I am!

Voila! Fitted crib sheet!

Now all I need is that grandbaby!

Stuff My Stocking - Day 12 - Book

Our final day of the Stuff My Stocking event is a good one! It takes me back to my beginning days of quilting when I made this--

This is the Star Log Cabin and was made in the late 80's (or maybe early 90's) while on a retreat at Camp Lebanon. I had never heard of the concept of "Quilt in a Day", but was intrigued enough to try it out. It was more like "most of a quilt in a weekend", but I wasn't put off by that because I really liked the thorough directions and process written by Eleanor Burns. From her many TV shows and patterns and books, I think she has helped shape most of the quilters I know. She is an interesting woman with a great sense of humor.

I have been checking out this book and found plenty of projects in there for a quilter of any experience level. Stuff My Stocking - Day 10 - Needles

Got needles?

Of course we do! Just look at what I found around the house!

A whole bundle of knitting needles that someone could inherit, or more likely discard when they have to clean out my stash room(s)!

I found these really old needles from Grandma's sewing box. A scrap of old newspaper made the perfect needle holder. I can still smell her when I open the box, and feel transported back to sitting on her lap.

We have some surgical suture just in case I have to close any incisions.

We have big old needles that are really useful for basting a turkey! Injected turkey is the best!

Scrapbookers and paper crafters make use of pigma pens in many ways, too, but since I won't let myself go near those aisles in the craft stores for fear of disappearing into the Bermuda Triangle of crafting, those uses will remain a mystery to me!

We love to try new products so we can honestly tell you, our customer, what our experience is. We have a new laundry soap from Mary Ellen's Products on the shelf -- Best Wash for Precious Fabrics. We have loved using their Best Press for our pressing and ironing. So we sent Debbie home on a mission to test it out in her own washing machine. When we had performed the sniff test it seemed like a very concentrated lavender scent, and we were leery that it would be too scented for the wash. But Debbie came back with the proof that it only left a faint scent on the clothing that was washed. The information below is from the product website:

We found a new type of rick rack when we were cruising the aisles of Quilt Market. It is not the traditional woven rick rack, it looks and feels more like grosgrain ribbon.

We were intrigued, so of course, we had to purchase a selection of colors! It is about 1" wide, and will be fun to use in some of the patterns calling for a special trim. I know of one upcoming class that will use rick rack, and with this many colors, there is probably one to fit your style!

Beautiful Batiks

One of our favorites in fabrics are the wonderful batik prints. We have collected some of our quilts using batik fabrics to display in the front window.

We have all of the patterns on-hand or on order, so please look them over. We don't have these exact fabrics on hand, since the nature of printing batiks makes it very difficult, if not impossible, to obtain reprints. Debbie and I saw a very informational video at Quilt Market about the process, and we have asked to have access to it to share with you soon. It brings a whole new appreciation for these one-of-a-kind hand printed and dyed fabrics. But you don't have to go through hours and hours of labor with wax and ink and dye to get beautiful batiks! Just walk in our door and you can admire every color of the rainbow in fine batik fabric, and choose your bolt(s)!

Hi! Sunday was not a day of rest for us! I hope that some of you had a more relaxing day! We did have a good class this morning (at 8!) about organizing store promotions, etc. It was presented by Kizer and Bender, both very knowledgeable and inspiring speakers. The rest of the day, right up until the last call at 6 PM, was spent searching for new ideas to bring back to the store.

We did a little bit of an interview with Elizabeth Bishop about the new Ellie Mae patterns--

We did order some fabric today--Clothworks, Blue Hill and Moda. Some good things to look forward to!

One of our goals on this trip was to find some new sources for embroidery patterns, both hand and machine. We hit the jackpot with Turnberry Lane. Here is just a peek at some of the patterns we purchased:

SamSarah Design Studio was another new source for us, and we especially liked this little advent calendar pattern. The individual squares are attached by a magnet so you can count down the days.

Another good find was the Abbey Lane booth. We have enjoyed patterns by this designer before, and picked up a new book, Simple Choices, that looks like it could be a good possibility for a future class.

Day 2

A full and busy and fun day is coming to an end. We walked and walked and walked. With an occasional pause for purchasing and inquiries in some of the many vendor booths. And maybe a snack break! Although a lot of the booths have a little candy dish to keep us moving!

Here is the bright sunny morning vista from our hotel window--

One of our first stops in the convention center was at the Checker booth. Checker is a distributor of all things related to sewing and crafting and quilting, etc. We especially wanted to look for the type of items that would be interesting Christmas gifts for our customers. We liked these "Quilt Happy" coffee mugs.

Or tea mugs! A little later we had an appointment with David, our rep for P&B Textiles to see their newest lines of fabric. One of the fabric groups that we especially liked was Leila Rose by Alex Anderson, and not just because she was there, too! She showed us one of her quilt samples made from the fabric--

If you are new to quilting, you may not know that Alex Anderson has authored some of the best instructional books available, has taught for many years, has hosted her own TV show, and currently partners with Ricky Tims to run The Quilt Show.

Next we headed over to the Kwik Sew booth to meet up with our friends there. We especially wanted to check out what Elizabeth (aka Betty) has been working on with a new division of the company. Ellie Mae Designs is a new group of sewing patterns that target a different audience, and we had heard a few whispers and rumors about what was in the works. This was the official "unveiling" of the pattern line, and we were impressed! My favorite item has to be the set of storage boxes! We will be watching and waiting for more fun designs in addition to the great ones already available!

We went to the Smith St. Designs booth to find out what they have for new machine embroidery designs. This Halloween one is appropriate for this weekend--

Our Bernina customers love these embroidered and appliqued patterns!

The next stop was a quickie to place an order for the Primitive Quilts magazine. This is a new publication, and will be good reading for our customers who enjoy a homespun feel in their projects. Thinking of you, Nancy!

We stocked up on some beautiful new plush fabrics from Shannon Fabrics, and have some great ideas for samples to show ways to use them. They have some beautiful designs that aren't restricted to baby and kid quilts and gorgeous sculpted pieces.

We found another Minnesota designer, Anne Marie Yohnk of Quilts Remembered. It's fun to see another familiar face!

We stopped to talk with Nicole Chambers-Kaya of Tiger Lily Press. We thought the tablerunner and placemat in the background would become favorites at Bear Patch.

We found designer and Minnesotan Darlene Zimmerman in the EZ Quilting booth, demonstrating her latest ruler designs. She does come up with some great ideas!

The Market closed at 6 and we headed back to our room to unload our bags before a relaxing dinner and good conversation. Now we need to rest up for our 8 AM class and another full day covering more of the show floor!

On Assignment

We covered some miles yesterday, traveling to Houston for the International Quilt Market. We are here to search for the best of the best to bring back to Bear Patch.

Of course, the travel time was put to good use with some easy knitting!

A little baby hat!

We had a stop-over in Denver, here is proof!

Now wandering the halls of the convention center--

we spent all day attending "Schoolhouse", which is a whole roster of 15-30 minute sessions to inform quilt shop owners about new ideas and products. This evening we attended a Bernina reception, and caught up with some familiar faces. Then it was time to work our way through a big crowd attending "Sample Spree", which is sort of like a preview of the official Market with a chance to purchase single items on the spot instead of ordering larger amounts for the store. Debbie was tempted by these bundles from AdornIt. I was supposed to be her conscience, but I'm not so sure she should have assigned that job to me after the appetizers and wine!

A couple of goodies that we will be bringing back to Bear Patch--

These cute little pattern booklets from Liberty Homestead, each contains a quilt pattern and a smaller bonus project.

And Kristina will love these new wool designs, especially since she won't have to stitch up the samples! They are from Plays With Wool Designs.

We have enjoyed meeting up with some friends and favorite designers--Kaye England, Alex Anderson, Barri Gaudet, Anna Griffin--and who knows what tomorrow will bring! It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it!

We are happy to now offer you some great kits for several of the Bareroots candlemats and wraps. These are packaged by Bareroots and contain the wool felt, embroidery floss, and even beads when needed. I have made one of them and was very happy with the kit. The kits are priced at a very

Right now I am working on this Christmas design and was surprised to find that the kit even includes the ribbon ties for the wrap!

New Class Offerings

We have many new samples on display for all the new classes starting this fall. Most of the classes still have openings, so look through the website listing and see what will fit into your schedule. Here are just a few to entice you:

Kwik Scrappy String Quilt
This is a great pattern for stash-busting. Emily will get you started with the freezer paper technique in the first class, and then help you put some blocks together at the second class. The pattern is designed by Two Kwik Quilters.

This cute guy is one of the characters on the Winter Season quilt. The fabric in this quilt is from Andover and the pattern was designed for it. You might have already seen the summer and fall seasonal designs. This one was irresistible, and since it is not a Christmas theme, you can enjoy it all winter long. Pam will help you with the machine applique to attach the circle designs, and if you have the Bernina circle tool you will learn how to use it. Buttonhole, zigzag or decorative stitches will work for the applique. The class starts October 6, hopefully long before we get any snow for real snowmen!

This is one block in the Mariner's Compass quilt. Janell Dahms is our guest instructor again, and she will walk you through all you need to know to make these beautiful blocks. Starting November 2, this technique class will teach you the paper-piecing method. We are very happy to have Janell return to teach this class that has been in demand by many.

Gone Haunting from Clothworks

Unpacking these frightful fabrics gave me visions of candy corn dancing through my head! This is one of the cutest little Halloween groups we could find, and I especially like the 2 on the end with all the words. There are many possibilities with this one--we have sold a lot of the Crabapple Hill embroidery patterns for Halloween designs, and these colors go perfectly with the pale crayon coloration used in those whimsical pictures. Come audition your own! That striped print would be a perfect border on a hand towel or cut with a 60 degree ruler for a tablerunner. What other possibilities can you imagine?

Many Salted Nut Roll fans are sooo thankful for Pearson's, keeping them supplied right along with Nut Goodies and Mint Patties. So we have a sampling for all our Shop Hoppers! How good is that! Come and get them before they are gone!

We spent yesterday rearranging and displaying everything in our front windows and entry to highlight our "Made in Minnesota" theme. Complete with Spam! Not the junk mail type, but the meat-in-a-can type. The yellow caution tape is there as a reminder that all the fabric and kits for these samples cannot go out of the store until tomorrow. We open at 9AM, so come early! There are several more samples with patterns and kits just waiting for you. The coffee will be on and Grandma's Bakery is just across the street! We have sampled most all of their products, doing the research for you, and my pick is the Monster Cookies. Just a suggestion!

Gearing Up!

We are sorting, moving, organizing, planning and, of course, stitching!

We want to be all ready for you when Quilt MN starts on Friday.

Yes, this Friday!

So here is a little preview of 2 new quilt patterns I have designed--

First, Sweet Treat, measuring ~48 x 72. This will teach you mitered corners for the border if you haven't already picked up that skill, and makes good use of the Tri-Recs rulers by Sew EZ to make those stars with the long, skinny points. If you don't have the rulers, I have included regular piecing, paper foundation piecing, and template diagrams as alternate methods. Although, to tell the truth, the Tri-Recs is the way to go, and I'm not just trying to sell rulers!

Scenes of Minnesota farms and woods are placed between the stars.

Next is Row Low, measuring ~70x80. This is a row quilt that makes perfect use of the border print in the limited edition fabric group. It even includes the maroon and gold of the U of M! Luckily no gophers were included! But there are deer and eagles and loons and ducks all over. Rows of pieced blocks alternate with the scenery rows. This is similar to the quilt I designed 2 years ago, One Row to Go (aka Minnesota Mixer), but is bigger and has different pieced blocks.

And that's not all! We have quite a few other ideas of ways to use some of this fabric, and we are putting together displays and samples as fast as we can! We hope to have kits of everything available, as long as our fabric holds out! You can still place a request for kits or yardage, just give us a call at 651-429-1039.

The new spring 2011 Better Homes & Gardens Quilt Sampler magazine is in the shop! This is one of those quilting magazines that I always look forward to. Especially because it brings back good memories of 2001, the year that Bear Patch was included in the Top Ten in the country!

I know that we have so many requests for this magazine, so we want you to know that it is now available. There are 10 new shops described and displayed for you. I like to use these magazines to help plan where I would like to stop on road trips and vacations. This time, I am excited to see Yellow Creek Quilt Designs included because I have just completed a quilt that they have designed and it is shown in one of the magazine photos! It is the quilt shown below draped over a display on the right. And it is offered as a class starting later this month right here in White Bear Lake. It would be fun to have you join us!

We always have to have a quick look at the list of shops to see if any other great Minnesota shops have been included, and once again, we are represented. This time it is Gathering Friends in Bird Island. Congrats to them! The picture below shows a bit of the interior of the old bank building that they occupy. They have done a great job of preserving a bit of history.

Today marked the start of the annual Twin Cities' Shop Hop, a joint effort of 11 metro quilt shops that traditionally kicks off our early summer season. We thoroughly enjoy the chance to see many familiar faces and newcomers walk through our doors. It always seem like everyone is in such a good mood!

Today we had the privilege of hosting Linda Hohag (Brandywine Designs) with her cute, cute, cute quilts combining her love of applique, little critters, and Halloween! This is her newest book, just completed in time for the Spring International Quilt Market. Sorry I have no picture to show, you just have to take my word for it that it is a must-have for your quilt book library.

This afternoon we also enjoyed the company of Terry Atkinso n (Atkinson Designs), sharing her newest patterns for bags, quilts, pillows and a great little e-reader cover. I also learned a great tip from her on how to get a pillow into a pillow cover that has an overlapped back without ripping the seams as I just recently did! Her pillow cover pattern has quite a deep overlap, which I really prefer for a neater finished look. But it really is impossible to get the pillowform into that cover, unless you use Terry's magic maneuver. When the cover is all sewn, turn only half of it right side out (the half that has the overlap layer that will be the underneath layer when finished). Insert the pillowform, tucking 2 corners into place in the cover. Then smush the pillowform as you are maneuvering the other half of the pillow cover right side out and over the form. Hard to explain, would be good to get on a video!

A New Product

Heat Press Batting Together
We are always watching for new ideas and products to bring to our customers, and this one came to our attention recently. With the trend to use up stash fabric, now you can easily do the same with your batting.

A great idea developed and packaged for the quilter who has assorted pieces of leftover batting just gathering dust on the shelf. This works on little pieces or large chunks. I have tried it and found no problems with it, in fact, I could not tell where it was applied after I did my quilting. A couple of pictures to show you how it works, although it is pretty basic and there is a video on the company's website.

I cut the batting edges nice and straight with a rotary cutter first. The picture above shows the 2 pieces on the ironing board with the strip of tape.
Then I aligned the batting edges, centered the tape on top, and ironed with an up-and-down motion thoroughly. I let it cool before moving it, and there are no gaps or slips.

The package says it can be used with either cotton or poly batting, I have only used it on cotton so far. The package retails for $7.99 and contains 10 yards of tape, enough to do a few large quilts and many small ones. So much better than trying to baste the edges of batting together if you want to be thrifty and use up what you have. Pick up a package and try it out!

We always have some handy during our classes so everyone can share in the love. And one great way for you to try some of the scents is with these cute little guys--a 6 ounce spray bottle for just $3.95 each. If you pre-wash your fabrics, you will notice that they come out of the dryer with a much different "hand" minus the products used in the factory to get that nice crisp finish and colorfastness. But some of us like a little bit of crispness in our fabrics when we are stitching pieces together, and pre-pressing with the help of Best Press is an excellent option. The Embroidery Corner

We did some re-arranging and made changes in our embroidery section recently. Hopefully it makes the threads a little easier to view and choose. We hung some new dish towel samples to show off some of the great patterns available for towels or any other purpose you might be interested in. Both of the samples shown here are from Aunt Martha's patterns and can purchased or ordered at the store.

The beautiful block below is one of the series of blocks to be taught in the Patriots in Petticoats class that will start in February. It is really a beautiful quilt and you will learn some perfect piecing techniques from Laurel. A great way to start out 2011! Call us to register, but don't hesitate!

New Things for the New Year

We have been just had a big turnover of quilt samples throughout the store to make room for all the new class samples. Here are a couple of things that are not included in the classes, but are fresh samples and fun projects.

This is Tipsy Snowman, I think he was celebrating a little bit too much on New Year's Eve! The pattern from Patchabilities includes the cute buttons to accesorize his snowy outfit. The pattern is $8.99 and the fabric kit is $9.95.

This quilt is called Basically Shirtings. The fabric and pattern were designed by Kaye England for Wilmington Fabrics. They are great reproductions of civil war-era fabrics. The quilt is not real big (48"x60") and the kit costs $65. Pattern is included in the kit or on their website as a free download.

Even though our website is not set up with a shopping cart (yet), we will gladly take a phone or email order to be shipped. What fun to find a quilt in your mailbox!

last minute ideas

Since we are getting down to the wire, if you are still looking for quilterly gifts you might want to abandon the thought of making a queen size quilt and go with something like Gloves In A Bottle instead! We have a travel size and a regular 8 oz. size for the perfect stocking stuffer. We have sample bottles of this in a couple places around the store, and they get plenty of use by both staff and customers. It is a good non-greasy lotion without a lot of perfume. Highly recommended! Don't wait too long, though, because we are closed December 24-25-26. That only leaves 3 days to get your Bear Patch shopping done, so get a move on!

A couple more tested projects that we can easily recommend for Christmas gift-giving

(or maybe a treat for yourself!).

Pot Pinchers from Vanilla House Designs (pattern $8)

I had seen this pattern in the store, but until I saw a sample of the finished Pot Pincher I wasn't sure what the advantage was. But what I didn't realize is that they are made with a firm Timtex piece in the top part that covers the back of your fingers, and makes them really appealing! They seem kind of like little puppets. You really need to have a pair of these and use them on both hands when lifting a hot casserole or cake pan to get the best effect. They are perfect in some of those kitchen/food prints that we have.

Composition Covers by Indygo Junction (pattern $8)

This pattern includes 3 variations of fabric covers to cover a standard composition book (those notebooks with black and white covers and lined pages). It was pretty easy to make and turned out great, would be perfect paired up with a pretty messenger bag like this:

Who doesn't love a great new bag?! These are 2 choices that you can still have time to complete and put under the tree in time for Christmas:

The Two Hour Tulip tote is a sweet little pattern, and really comes close to the 2 hour time limit! I made the small size, but there are actually 3 sizes included in this $12 pattern with pocket variations. I put an extra long strap on this one because I foresee wearing it across my body when I am on a trip or outing and just need a little bit of stuff with me instead of a big ol' bag.

The Snap Happy II is part of the ongoing series of clever patterns from Stitchin' Sisters. This variation has a nice squared off bottom. The top snaps shut with the use of that ultra high tech gadget, a metal carpenter's tape measure! I made this one using some heavier weight fabrics with a very nice firm result, but I have also used regular quilting cottons with equally good results. One tip I like to share with people learning how to construct bags is to use some interfacing on the wrong side of the fabrics to give a crisper finish. Mid or heavy weight can both be used, depending on the results you like. A Pressing Idea

Who would know how important a good iron is other than your fellow quilters? These 2 products have risen to the top of the heap, in our opinion. The Rowenta Travel Iron ($50.00) is easy to use, comfortable to grip and a good size to transport. When you are sewing with a group, it is always nice to have your own little ironing spot but you don't want to jeopardize the power source with using a full size iron. This is the perfect solution!

But when it comes to a full size iron, this Velocity iron from Reliable is the cat's meow! It is actually on my own wish list this year! And if it's good enough for me, it's good enough for Oprah's list, too! This V50 model is $115, get 'em while they're hot!

Working with Like Sew Websites over the past few weeks, we have made some big changes in the look and feel of our entire website. We went "live" this week, timed to publish our list of classes for fall. This is going to be a move away from the traditional newsletter that Debbie has published 3 times a year for 13 years, and with that change comes a few growing pains. Bernina Barb and Laurel just returned from Chicago where we spent 2-1/2 days of Bernina V6 Embroidery Software advanced training. We were among about 65 shop owners and teachers learning more about the fabulous things this software can do. We also got to talk to Bernina people from all over the U.S. and learn some of the fun things they're doing with the V6 software. We learned so much and can't wait to share it with all of you! The hard part will be deciding where to start! That's Barb in the picture during one of our afternoon breaks.

We Have Lots of PUL

Have you heard about this new product? Nothing fancy to look at, but a special fabric. PUL stands for Polyurethane Laminate. It is a waterproof fabric but not a glossy nor stiff texture like some laminates. It is backed with a soft knit fabric and is about 58" wide and $10.50/yd. Very effective for lining beach bags, lunch bags, baby bibs, etc. We have several patterns that call for PUL or could be converted to use it. This one is Lunch Bunch by Possibilities and includes little snack bags and a napkin along with the standard lunch sack.

Quilts For Kids workday

We are setting up for a fun day of working on new little quilts for donation to local hospitals for the children that need a quiltie hug. Here is one of many that were brought today from the Northern Material Girls quilt guild from North St. Paul, MN. I love this one, made from a cut panel and stitched between the blocks with a feather stitch. I want this panel!!

Let the fun begin!

Today marks the start of the annual statewide quilt shop hop, running through August 15. We have several new quilts on display, including 2 designs available exclusively at Bear Patch. Above is Star Light by Emmaline Design. It is 72" square and kits are going fast. The pattern is available, and would also be great for charm packs that you might have collected. Our second exclusive design was created by Mary Herrschleb (MH Designs) and features hand embroidered blocks in a wallhanging quilt made of these great blue and white fabrics. It is also available as a kit. We do have yardage of the special edition prints by Holly Taylor for Moda, but supply is limited so don't delay! Kids for Quilts For Kids

Today we had some special customers in the store, 2 young ladies who helped their scout troop use their talents to make a donation quilt for Quilts For Kids. They are members of Girl Scout Troop 51213 from White Bear Lake, MN. There are 15 members of the troop, and they did a good job putting this together.

On the left is Hannah Muntifering and on the right is Sophia Forliti. Sophia's mom, Stephanie (in the black shirt) is the troop leader. Darlene Nelson (in the white shirt) is a local longarm quilter who was key to making this happen.

Darlene made up the blocks and then taught the girls how to put them all together. She quilted it for them on her longarm machine. Beautiful! It's a perfect project for helping these girls learn about fabric and creativity and community service. Here's the badge they were each awarded:

In the past we've shown off pictures of both Debbie and Pam with their fishing experiences. This picture is from Laurel's vacation a couple of weeks ago. You'll probably notice that it's not me in the picture. That's my husband George, showing off his bass. I'm just positive that the hat is what attracted this bass to bite in the first place! He discovered that humming birds like Bernina red, too! I have to confess that I wasn't even in the boat that morning. Although I do love to fish (And yes, I bait my own hook, even with leeches, and take all but northerns off the hook), I'm kind of a fair weather fisherperson. It was windy so I was back at the cabin sewing on my Bernina! I really did catch quite a few fish, just none this big--and I got quite a bit of sewing done!

Day 1 of Quilt Market

Finally, Minneapolis Quilt Market 2010 is here! Pam and Laurel are patiently waiting at the door of the show room. This market has the 3rd highest number of attendees on record. We were able to take classes from well known intructors and designers as well as from new. Can't wait to share what we learned!

I enjoyed a class with Reiko Kato. What a lovely Japanese designer. Soft music played while her interpreter shared her words with us. I learned that taupe is more than a color- it is a Japanese lifestyle. Reiko's fabrics are incredible to work with. We have quite a collection of them at Bear Patch. We have been waiting patiently and it is finally here! Cosmo Floss by Lecien is imported from Japan and feels like silk. It is 100% cotton and color fast. Meg from Crabapple Hill Studio uses this floss in her patterns. There are conversion charts from DMC to Cosmo available. At $1.00 per skein, you will want to have them all.

Final Day of Shop Hop 2010 and Bouquet Day

It's hard to believe that Shop Hop 2010 has come and gone. What a fun-filled 3 days. Besides being a busy Shop Hop day, Saturday was also Bouquet Day for all of the White Bear Merchants. To make a beautiful bouquet all you needed to do was stop into 1 of the 28 participating shops to receive a flower for your bouquet. Best of all, it was actually May Day! Mary Herschleb was our invited guest- her new "Just Another Bag" was her biggest hit. We even had a Prom mini fashion show as Sue S's. son and date and Debbie's niece stopped in for what has become a family tradition during Shop Hop. (You really don't have to get that dressed up to Hop!) Monday evening will be the drawing for winners of Shop Hop as the shop owners join together for dinner Monday night. Will you be the lucky winner? Next's years Shop Hop is already in the works. Don't forget to stop in to see class samples. Sign up begins Saturday, May 8th. Thanks for a great Hop!

Another fun day at the shop! Lorrie Franz from Bean Counter Quilts was with us all day. If you are looking for quick and easy baby quilt to make, you should take a look at these. I love Bouncing Borders and her new Sheep quilt! Tomorrow brings Mary from MH Designs. Her new bag pattern has been a huge hit already. I like that it is a little more "dressed-up" from the normal "Quiltie" looking purses that are out there. I can't believe tomorrow is the last day of the hop. Many gals have already handed in there finished stamped cards! It's so nice to hear all of you who want to hand in their cards at Bear Patch. Come join us tomorrow- can't wait to see you!

First Day of Shop Hop 2010

We started our day with Linda Hohag from Brandywine Design. Her new book of appliqued paperdolls was just too cute! We all found our inner child as we changed the dolly's outfit. I think we would make the quilt- or at least a block and never give it away. With 4 new patterns, Terry Atkinson entertained us in the afternoon. Urban Cabin was a huge hit. After seeing her demo of "easy to insert" zipper techniques, we will all be on our way to making zillions of Ca$h and Carry bags. You won't be able to make just one! The kits are inexpensive and include everything you need to start creating. The Woodbury Quilt Guild has a "not to be missed" raffle quilt. I would love to be the lucky winner! Friday brings Lorrie Franz from Bean Counter Quilts. She will have lots of fun new samples and patterns. Mary from MH Designs will join us on Saturday. The Ducky quilt and Dribble bib are too adorable! After lots of coffee, lemonade, bars and cookies I think its time to get to bed. Tomorrow promises to be another fun day.

looks like spring!

If you look outside the front window, you would swear it's the middle of winter.

But if you look inside at our new quilt for the Twin Cities' Shop Hop 2010, it sure looks like spring is here! Well, the quilt still needs some binding, but I just finished the quilting and can't resist sharing a peek with you! I love the floral border and all the coordinates that Laurel used to put it together. Each of the 10 participating shops has contributed a block design, and each store gets to put those blocks together in their own style. I think Laurel did an great job with a layout that shows off the 10 separate blocks combined into a whole quilt. See the quilt and get the block patterns during the Shop Hop April 29, 30 and May 1. Paulette has been busy and Cosmo Floss is Coming!

I asked Paulette to dye us some fun bright colors of wool. Guess what! She did! Don't they look great? Hurry in before they are gone. Guess I can ask her to dye more- next time she will bring in some soft and pretty pastels.

Thursday morning. That was the day I finally made the decision to order Cosmo Floss from Lecien. This beautiful 6-strand floss is made in Japan of pure Egyptian cotton. We will have all the colors along with a DMC conversion chart. Look for it sometime in early April. A lot of top designers use this floss including Meg of Crabapple Hill.

Zippers Galore!

I had a great time Saturday using the fun colored zippers from Atkinson Designs. Terry's new pattern- Cash and Carry is so fun to sew and so simple! There are 3 styles of tiny little bags to sew- I can't decide which is my favorite. I just know I will make lots of them for friends and family. Directions for putting in the zippers couldn't be easier. The visuals are great. Each bag is completely lined- you don't even realize your have the lining done until you have finished your bag- bet you can't make just one!

I can't believe how many gals stood in line last Saturday morning to begin our Winter 2010 class sign-up. Thank you to all who braved the cold weather! If you haven't stopped in there are still lots of openings. Come check out the great samples. Can't take the class- pick up the pattern and a kit, or pick your own fabric. Don't forget- it's always good luck to start a new quilt in the New Year! Here's a picture of the Easy as Pie sample. The fabric is from Moda- Laundry Basket is the designer. We had such a great time at our fall retreat! How could the time go by so quickly? There was lots of laughter- it's a wonder how all those many projects were completed! I tried out a few new recipes for breakfast and dessert and made some old favorites for dinner. Nancy and Leisl's soups were yummy. Sandy and Deb made the oh-so-good cucumber sandwiches in the afternoon to keep our energy levels up. Lots of mini lessons on things we forgot (or never knew) and some fun projects to make for gifts or to keep for ourselves. I even made 2 table toppers for our Christmas window display at the store and a fantastic bag from Kwik Sew using Free Spirit's laminated fabric. Before we knew it, it was time to pack it all back up. Can't wait until we all get together again in March. I better start trying out new recipes on Bob....

Have you heard about the wonderful Kinkame fabrics coming from Japan?

The Clothworks Fabric company has been working with designer Reiko Kato to bring these to us, now available here! These are not your typical geisha girl designs, but the very soft and subtle hues that have been a signature of fine Japanese fabrics. Shades of taupe, grey, rose, green and brown all combine to give a very sophisticated look. The prints feature tiny flowers and geometric designs. The textured yarn-dyed wovens are exceptional. We have the European Taupe II collection on hand and have ordered the European Taupe III group.

Debbie just finished making a great small quilt from this fabric, this pattern is Appomattox by Blue Underground. Well, the binding isn't done yet, but "finished" is a relative term open to interpretation! It will be on display very soon! If you visit the Clothworks website, you can view the fabrics and even download some free patterns. I quilted this project for Debbie and it is an example of a good use of a simple all-over design that I like to use instead of the usual meandering design. Actually, this quilting design is kind of ingrained in my brain now because it is what I used on the miles of tablerunners that I made for my daughter's wedding earlier this month!

And here's a little teaser for you--if we can make it work, we hope to have Reiko Kato here in our store in the spring! No confirmed details yet, but this would be a very special event not to be missed!

Minnesota State Fair Ribbons

We are so very proud of 15 year old Mikayla and 11 year old Elise! Mikayla came to the shop with her grandmother Marion ( a great customer!) and picked out these great fabrics for her quilt. She sewed it up, entered it in the fair and won a ribbon! 11 year old Elise sewed her capris while taking our Kids Sew Camp this summer with Jeanne. Elise and mom came back to the shop to pick out fabric for a matching top. She entered her top and capris along with a quilt and afghan and won ribbons on all. Congratulations you two!
